Hands of Healing, Inc. was a spark ignited after 2 families from the Largo, Florida area adopted children from Guatemala. Personal interest lead to a search for a special heartfelt mission within Central America.
Hands of Healing, Inc. is a not for profit 501c3 organization that provides medical, dental and vision services for the poor and underserved people of rural Guatemala. Through the use of an in-country organization the focus is on the total picture for the Mayan population. Guatemala has the highest malnutrition rate in Latin America. The in-country partners concentrate on the health and well-being of all age groups. Short-term medical clinics, staffed by volunteers, come and administer healthcare services. Most of these individuals have never been seen by healthcare professionals before. Something so simple as eye glasses provide the gift of sight to sew, weave, or read for the first time!
Hands of Healing also provides support and education for the Bombaros (firefighters/EMTs) of Guatemala, most of whom are volunteers. This ongoing relationship fosters the growth and expansion of firefighting services throughout Central America.
Hands of Healing does not enter the country with an attitude of only “giving to them.” It is an exchange and connection between individuals and between 2 different cultures. Each trip is unique and profoundly impacts everyone involved. While the Covid 19 pandemic prevented travel in 2020, the needs of the Guatemalan people were still supported through monetary funds. The hope is that an October 2021 trip will be possible.
