Animal lovers are a special breed….

In 2008, animal lover Debi Boies and pilot Jon Wehrenberg flew from Florida to South Carolina to rescue a Doberman and save the dog’s life.   The trip was a success and the two quickly brainstormed on how to rescue other animals.  The dream quickly became a reality when Pilots N Paws was launched.  This website provided a resource where private pilots willing to provide free transport could connect with people and organizations who rescue, shelter or foster animals to save the lives of these animals.  Working with rescue groups across the country, pilots donate their time, their planes, and their fuel, to transport animals to places around the United States where they will be adopted.

Pet overpopulation is a disturbing problem in the United States. More than 4 million no-longer-wanted pets are euthanized each year.  While spay/neuter programs have worked to decrease domestic animal populations in some parts of the country, other areas are considered high kill.  Until now, there have been few options for these innocent animals and Pilots N Paws is helping to change that.

Today, the organization has reached more than 6,000 pilot volunteers and has rescued and transported over 200,000 animals since 2008.  That’s almost 16,000 animals finding new homes each year.  Dogs, cats, pigs, reptiles and rabbits are just a few who have taken flight.  In addition to flying rescue animals, pilots also fly injured wildlife, retired military working dogs, and pets for our military that are deployed and need to get their pet to a safe home.

It’s the goal of Pilots N Paws to make transport available for all rescued animals that have homes waiting for them – no matter where those homes are!
