B the Difference is not just a catchy name – this amazing organization truly strives to be the difference in the lives of individuals afflicted with NF.

What is NF? 

1 in 3,000 people are affected by a complex genetic disorder called Neurofibromatosis (NF) that causes tumors to grow on various nerves throughout the body. NF can lead to blindness, bone abnormalities, dermal, brain and spinal tumors, deafness, disfigurement, learning disabilities, and excruciating or disabling pain.  

The severity of NF ranges from extremely mild cases to more severe cases, in which one or more serious conditions may develop that can affect any area of the body.  Living with NF can be extremely difficult.  Frequent doctor visits, procedures, and symptoms take a toll on patients and their families.

This is where B the Difference comes to the rescue….

The Brandon Merritt Charitable Foundation (known as B the Difference) is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization that was formed in 2011 to support individuals and their families battling NF by providing a much needed “break” for the individual and their families through 5-day hosted vacation trips in states within the U.S. that Brandon Merritt loved the most.  This program honors Brandon Merritt’s memory and his curiosity of adventure, love of the great outdoors, and appreciation for the simple moments in life.  Brandon was my nephew and was loved so dearly. Small everyday moments such as seeing a turtle remind us of his presence. 

…through B Happy and B Kind!

B Happy gives participants the opportunity to escape hospital beds, routine tests, MRIs, chemotherapy, and more, while embarking on a journey they will never forget.  The testimonials of participants are truly inspirational.

B Kind was started when COVID-19 halted travel and the B Happy trips. B the Difference immediately pivoted to assist families in alternative ways by providing relief to NF families who are incurring COVID induced expenses/needs. B Kind has provided assistance through food security, online schooling devices, hotel funds for out of state surgeries and appointments, school supplies/uniforms, and rent assistance during the pandemic. 

Through the B Kind program, over 50 families were helped in 2020. In fact, 31 families were helped in December 2020, through “B Kind for the Holidays!” one a day for every day in December 2020!
